exhausting thoughts

Although we are able to produce many standard pattern exhausts with our interest being mainly in off-road bikes we have been designing the pipes as well as bending them up.

Our main design criteria are:

To achieve this we have been using up to three different radius forms on some pipes, which is obviously more labour and tooling intensive than just doing 'follow-on-bending' where one radius form is used. For our high-level pipes we have been using material with 1.2mm thickness because it is light. For low-level pipes we use 1.5mm wall thickness tube for its added robustness.

a short history

Little did we realise what a 'can of worms' we were opening when we were given a mandrel tube bending machine and undertook learning how to use it.

Having grasped the basics of operation and fettelling the, admittedly rather second-hand, machine lo and behold a second, larger, machine came along at a price too good to miss.

The learning process began once again, both operation of the machine and how to produce the tooling.

We found the tooling costs to be a serious problem due to the number of tool parts needed. To bend just one diameter of tube with one wall-thickness to one diameter of bend the following are necessary:

The typical price of such a set we found to be 2500.

This is a prohibitive price where small runs of production are concerned and it has only been through the help of our engineering and foundry contacts that we have managed to achieve all we have done so far. As the problems have come along so we have managed to overcome them, albeit in rather a time (as against hugely financial) consuming business.

So, after much tube wrinkling and (mandrel) ball breaking, we have achieved a pretty steady quality of bend which, to be honest, compares very favourably with many of the exhausts we've seen out there.

The learning and development work continue, the present challenge being to bend stainless steel. We have produced an improved Triumph Tiger Cub pipe so far, as can be seen in the photo on this page.

availability and prices

When making a certain exhaust we tend to do a batch of ten at a time, use or sell these and then plan another run. Therefore if you wish to order a pipe off us it is better to let us know sooner rather than later as it will increase the likelihood of that pattern of exhaust being next in line.

For availability please contact us.

We keep a small stock of chrome-finish universal oval silencers and megaphones (which we are running down in favour of stainless steel items), for the latter we can supply a cupped baffle to reduce noise further. We also produce a replica AJS/Matchless competition silencer in stainless steel with original-style baffling or perforatted tube and packing.
